RE: Chevy 1500 5.3 or 6.0

Not towing, my 5.3 gets about 2 MPG better than my 6.0. At 40,000 miles it will cost you about 410 more gallons a year at whatever the price of gas will be. Towing I would rather have the 6.0 HD, but you need to do the math and decide whats best for you.

RE: Employee pricing

I buy with the employee price all the time thanks to my in-laws. The fleet dept has a book that shows MSRP, dealer invoice, and employee price. The employee price is generally below what the dealer paid, the dealer gets their money from an account set up for employee purchases. The bad thing about this offer for me is as a member of the GM family, I get the employee price along with any incentive offered the public. So when you guys were getting $5000 off or 0% financing, I was getting all that plus the discount price. We also get employee price on any extras including extended warranty. Whenever they offer this price to the public they eliminate all or most of the other incentives which means it cost GM family memebers more. Oh well, I got my "08" before this incentive so I did fine.

RE: plan to buy truck out state

Yep, temporary transit tags will get you home. You will pay tax in your state. If you're buying it from a private party you won't really even need the temp tag. Private sellers don't charge tax, we just have you sign the transfer paper to clear our name off the title. Just don't get pulled over on the way home or they may want to see your transit tag.:E As far as smog equipment, you know you will be able to pass your state if it cleared the Peoples Republic of California laws. I'm not even sure there is extra equipment on Cali diesels. I bought my TT in Iowa, got a transit tag for two weeks but ended up taking my time going home so I was out for a month, no problems. It sat in my yard for another three weeks till I went to DMV. They didn't care, just wanted to know when it got to Cali and how much I spent so they could get thier tax.

RE: AWD vs 2WD

AWD will give you more stability in all conditions, you just won't notice it as much on dry pavement. I wish my Chevy Express AWD was strong enough to drag my trailer. Wind, sand or gravel on a turn, an oil patch, all will be helped with AWD. Take a wheel with power and try and slide it accross pavement, it will keep trying to get traction, now drag a wheel with no power accross pavement there will be no forward traction, just sideways sliding. Now add wet roads and there will be no contest, AWD gives you 3 more tire footprints for power/traction (2 times if you have a locking rear on a 2WD). My Express AWD is a dream to drive in snow.

RE: pulling fiver in 4-wheel drive

Probably not for that short of time, especially if you were going pretty straight. What happens is what you felt, binding of the internals because there was no slip between the inside wheels and outside when turning. Don't sweat it, your truck is tough enough to stand up to that little brain fart. Just don't repeat the mistake too often.

RE: Refrigerator operation while driving

Only illegal in Ca when fueling or going through some tunnels (the tunnels will have a sign if you need to shut it off) Other wise it works great and always the way I travel.

RE: Tow Straps Question - Update on Page 2

I think towing this way is dangerous but if you are going to do it I would suggest not doing it on the freeway, a frontage road or back roads would be much better even if a bit longer. Don't buy the straps with the hook built in, get one with loops. A "D" ring works best on your truck, his truck the front hooks should be fine as long as the loop won't slide off. I've used these straps a lot while jeeping, but towing 30 miles gives me a bad feeling. Here is a link for more info on straps. straps

RE: Transmission temp hotter than normal?

Depends on your mechanic, but mine has no problem with me bringing in my supplies. I use synthetic oil and buy it in bulk. I think he prefers this since he has to make no calls or wait for delivery, he just charges for his time. No harm in asking.

RE: Tow Straps Question - Update on Page 2

Out here you're only allowed to use a strap to pull the vehicle off the road or freeway, they will cite you for anything else, but you know your laws better than I. Most straps are 20,000# which should be plenty, just make sure they aren't pulled across any sharp edges. Also I hope you are using solid anchor points, no hitch balls or bumpers. Auto Zone and Wal Mart both carry them. Drive slow and be careful, remind your friend his steering will be hard and it will take both feet to get the brakes to work. You sure a tow wouldn't be worth the money? or at least a tow dolly?

RE: Headed to Moab & need ATV info

Arch View is the only park and ride RV campground with full hookups, it is just north of Moab. Lots of trails out from park, a nice place to stay if your not, or can't, haul your quads to the staging areas. There is no street riding of Quads in Moab except for the jamboree once a year. arch view

RE: Qs about GM 6L90E

:Update: After reading the posts about starting in second I took my truck for a trial, I have used third as a start during stop and go traffic and found it went through the gears from first to third and stopped. Having lived in the Sierra's for 10 years I know starting in a higher gear does come in handy. I took the truck out stopping and starting off in M2, I tried it several times and it appears it does start in 2nd. I even hit the - button after I got moving and it downshifted to 1st telling me it started rolling in 2nd. I then started in M3, it started rolling in 1st and shifted normal till third where it held. So it appears it will start off in 2nd when M2 is selected but will go back to starting in 1st and shifting up if M3,M4,or M5 are selected. This tranny is just too smart for me. Hope this helps, if somebody finds it works different chime in.

RE: Qs about GM 6L90E

It will take off in 1st and shift to 2nd like normal. Basically it will work like a two speed auto shifting up and down as it would normally but with just the two gears. Sorry about all the grief in the previous posts. I was trying to explain as clear as I could, not start a pissing contest. My apologies.

RE: Hitch Limitations on Forest River MH's

They probably assume like most you will be towing a small car. To bad they didn't just put a hitch that matches the limit. Are you sure 5000# would be enough to flat tow a truck? My quad trailer is almost 1200# it would have to be a pretty light truck and trailer and those car haulers can be heavy.

RE: Purchased F450 today, should I get extended warranty?

I never go with the extended. My youngest daughter bought it on her SUV against my advice. She had her transmission go out and after seeing the repair bill she didn't have to pay :E, I was having a crow dinner.:R I don't advise against it anymore but do say deal for the lowest price and go for coverage on the power-train.

RE: Qs about GM 6L90E

Coming from someone who feels so strongly about Chevy vs Ford to put it in their profile, I find that a compliment. I bet you even have a little Calvin pissing on a Ford emblem on your truck. Talk with me again when you grow up.

RE: Qs about GM 6L90E

It doesn't take a college degree to figure the answer to that. Maybe you're stopped at the base of a hill with a short flat stretch before you start climbing, you want to climb the hill in 3rd and don't want the tranny shifting past 3rd as you build up some speed then have to downshift, you set the tranny at M3. Maybe you're in stop and go traffic and don't want the truck to go out of 2nd, you put the tranny in M2 and leave it there. Maybe you're stopped at the top of a long decent and want to limit the tranny to 3rd, why start in M1 and have to hit the + button twice as you build up speed? Put it in M3 and let it go. There are plenty of reasons, just because you can't figure it out doesn't mean you have to be condescending in your answers. P.S. beside the fact the original poster asked about starting out in M2 so it appears he may want to know how it works despite the fact you feel it's foolish.

RE: Qs about GM 6L90E

If you start in "M" you will HAVE to manually shift up FROM first gear. It will NOT come out of first gear automatically in "M". Now, it WILL downshift automatically when in "M", but from whatever gear you ended at. The 6L90 also has the grade braking feature like the allison. If you're use to the 4L80, the 6 speed takes a bit of getting used to. One more note... Go for the 3500. You'll get a BETTER deal than a 2500 because the advertising is cheaper than the 2500's. My 3500 cost me 5 grand cheaper than a lesser equipped 2500. Start in "M" what? Yes if you start in M1 it will not shift out, if you start in M3 it will start in 1st and go up to 3rd where it will stay, if you start in M5 it will go through all the gears till 5th automatically, but will not go to 6th (2nd overdrive) There is no plain "M" unless you don't tell it which gear you want, in which case it uses the gear you're in as your choice, it's "M" plus whatever you set with the + or - button or whatever gear your in when shifting to "M". If you're already stopped that would be M1.

RE: Qs about GM 6L90E

It works great.....:B Yes it will hold whichever gear you select, it will not shift down to a lower gear if the revs would be too high, but will wait till it is safe and shift down. It's fun to use both climbing and descending, but in TH mode the tranny will shift down every time you touch the brakes and shift up when you touch the gas so manual doesn't get much use. P.S. at a dead stop if you select 2nd it will start in 1st and not go higher than second, or whatever you set as the limit, it will not start in the higher gear if that's what you ment.
